In Cambodian culture elders are related to a high level of respect and they are respected by all age groups. Since there are no so-called nursing homes in the country, family member take care of the elderly and it is very common to live together. Although the conflict between different generations might occur, Cambodians strongly believe that as a person becomes older, he gains greater wisdom, and elderly are the carriers of knowledge and tradition, therefore it is important to show respect and take care of the elderly. This is important not only because they have a lot of experience to be passed on, but also because many old Cambodians are a subject to low quality of life.
In regard to care services, many families in Cambodia are reluctant to use it, because of the dominant cultural understanding, that by accepting external help the family is failing in their duty to care their older family member.
